Maine in August

In August, head to Maine for a weekend or family get-together, before kids head back to school.

Summer bounty of blueberries, raspberries, boysenberries, watermelon, summer corn, lobster rolls and fried clams. Fruit pies are great for breakfast!

Go canoeing and kayaking, hiking in forests and up to tops of mountains, swimming in lakes, sailing around the coast.

Acadia National Park

Here’s four favorite multi-generational activities, fun for grandparents and kids in Acadia National Park – Mount Desert Island area.

Jordan Pond Path
3.3 mi. loop, path goes around scenic Jordan Pond, through forests, with views of surrounding mountains. Trail is largely level, with boardwalks.

Echo Lake
Go swimming at Echo Lake Beach. Big sandy beach, shallow water to play in, picnic tables.

Bubbles Trail
1.5 mi. hike to the North and South Bubbles, with views of lakes, Jordan Pond, Sargent Mountain. Bubble Rock perched on side of the cliff is something to see.

Pemetic Mountain South Ridge Trail
4.0 mi. round trip, panoramic views of Frenchman Bay, the Bubbles, Sargent and Cadillac mountains. South Ridge Trail is gentle ascent, but 9000 ft. altitude gain to the summit.

Tip: In summer Acadia National Park has entrance kiosks and parking lots fill up early. Free shuttle is available around Mount Desert Island, here’s the routes.

Oceanarium Aquarium – Bar Harbor

Aquarium has different tanks with sea creatures that live off coast of Maine, including ghost shrimp (they’re transparent), sea anemones, green crabs, chain catsharks. We were surprised to see a blue lobster!

In large touch pool are oodles of sea stars, and kids can play in a real, full size lobster boat.

Oceanarium is open May to end of October.

Corea Harbor – Lunch on the Wharf

For a fun lunch, take a drive over to Corea Harbor for a meal at Lunch on the Wharf.

Menu includes lobster rolls, clam chowder, hot dogs, soy dogs, toasted cheese sandwiches, blueberry pie, whoopie pie, and blueberry soda.
