On the Oregon Coast, Lincoln City is called the “Kite Capital of the World.”
Lincoln City has miles of sandy beaches and above all, reliable winds to lift huge kites into the air.
For 40 years, Lincoln City Kite Festival takes place in June and September.
It’s a free two day festival on the beach. There’s a Wind Garden – huge sea creature kites flying high in the sky, and zippy sport kite performances by skilled kite fliers.
A very family friendly event, kids can decorate small paper kites attached to a stretchy string to wave in the air, also face painting, Pixie Fest carnival games, and food trucks.

This is top kite that holds up the line of big kites.

Lincoln City
For three years we’ve returned to Lincoln City in summer months and September for the Kite Festival. Each time we discover something different.
The first summer we rented a house on Siletz Bay. Everything we needed was close at hand, supermarkets, The Pines Dine food trucks, Barnacle Bill’s for fresh fish and seafood, ice cream shops. We watched luminous sunsets over the water at Siletz Bay Park (photo below).
Lincoln City is centrally located to visit other places to visit on the coast. Going north, head to Cape Meares, and Tillamook cheese factory and delicious ice cream.
South from Lincoln City, Depoe Bay has enclosed observation center for spotting gray whales, orcas, dolphins, seals and whale watching cruises.
In Newport, don’t miss Yaquina Head, Oregon Coast Aquarium, Hatfield Marine Center, large Farmers Market on Saturday, and our favorite place for lunch South Beach Fish Market.
